Coco Gauff’s Wimbledon win over fellow American Jessica Pegula
sends the star on to the women’s semifinals, making her only the sixth woman since 2000 to reach the last four at all four major tennis tournaments before turning 23. The win also means that
Gauff’s fashion game -- the New Balance X Miu Miu collaboration -- is getting closer looks, too.
And it’s a bit of a step change, given the amount of tennis conversation focused on
Nike’s exuberant fashion influence. This year, that includes Naomi Osaka’s stunning all-white ode to Japanese ceremonial dressing, which sold out before she ever stepped on the court, and
Serena Williams’s dramatic comeback moment in a Nike eyelet dress.
New Balance and Miu Miu have been collaborating on these limited-edition tennis lines for four years, with the first --
Miu Miu’s first-ever trainers -- hitting the runway in 2022. The 2024 launch put it firmly on the fashion map, with the 530 SL, a stripped-down and thin-soled shoe some fashion critics called
the beginning of the so-called torpedo shoe boom.

The brands and Gauff revealed the Wimbledon Collection a few weeks ago, along with a marketing campaign to support it.
Gauff, a tough player and seeded No. 7 in the famed English tournament, gets the tender treatment in
the apparel, with what New Balance describes as “graceful lingerie-inspired finishes” that include scalloping, pleated skirts and open backs, with outerwear in Silk Tec, a lightweight
fabric that provides protection and structure while remaining breathable and flexible.
But it’s the shoes she’s wearing that have all the kids talking: Two new versions of that 530
SL. Instead of suede, they’re made with a smooth leather-- GQ says the switch makes the $1,270 shoes feel “even swankier” -- and a classic gum sole. They’re available
in white or brown, with contrasting-color laces that add personalized flair.
Gauff’s advancing to the semis took everyone, even Gauff, by surprise. It’s been two years since she
won on grass.
“Honestly, pretty insane,” she told reporters after the match. Seeded No. 7 in the tournament, she moves on to face Karolina Muchova, the 10th-seeded Czech
who took down Osaka.
New Balance celebrated her win on Instagram, with a video that showed her jumping for joy after the match.
Although privately held, New Balance has said it is on target to surpass $10 billion in annual sales this year, after rising 19% to $9.2 billion last year, marking its fifth straight year of
double-digit gains. And in North America, sales rose 20% as the much larger Nike floundered.
Gauff is a big part of the company’s strategy as it aims to win with younger American
consumers. Other marquee athletes with the brand include NBA star Cooper Flagg and MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani.
