TV's Next Big-Billionaire Megahit Is Here

A new drama coming to HBO and HBO Max this week will take its place among the best of the recent TV dramas about the super, super rich.

The new one is called “War” -- a one-word title in the tradition of “Billions” and “Succession.”

They were stories of the billionaire class who waged their wars of business and family in the world’s most sumptuous surroundings -- gleaming office buildings, hotel suites, yachts, condominiums and mansions

“War” is cut from the same cloth, a story about the world’s richest tech titan and his movie star wife waging a divorce war that the show positions as the biggest in British history.

The show, premiering Thursday on HBO and HBO Max, was shot primarily in London where this war will be fought by two ruthless opposing law firms hired by each of the divorcing spouses -- social-media mogul Morgan Henderson (Dominic West) and movie star Carla Duval (Sienna Miller).

The third principal character is a hungry recent law school grad (Archie Renaux) who has drawn the interest of both firms.

He is a brash young man in a hurry -- a native Brit who obtained his law degree at the University of Michigan.

Episode One of this eight-episode drama sets the stage for what’s to come as both sides maneuver for advantage even before the legal papers are served.

In this show, both husband and wife have strong cases to make, but the biggest sticking point in the conflict is the validity of a prenuptial agreement that both parties signed at the outset of their marriage.

At the time, the movie star was making far more money than the would-be pioneer in global social media who had not yet made his fortune. In the present day, however, he is by far the wealthier of the two.

This show has high style and glamor to spare, starting with the two leads -- dashing Dominic West, 56, and gorgeous Sienna Miller, 44.

As high-profile spouses, Morgan and Carla are accustomed to the spotlight, but as their “War” gets going, they are about to draw more interest across the world than they have before.

“War” has all the earmarks of a “talker,” the kind of TV show that gets talked about and recommended by word of mouth to friends, family, vague acquaintances and the shopkeeper down the street.

The TV Blog is always reluctant to make predictions because so few of them are ever correct. But “War” has megahit written all over it.

“War” premieres Thursday (October 1) at 9 p.m. Eastern on HBO and HBO Max.
