"The White Board Guy" Joins West Cary Group As Executive Creative Director

Richmond, VA-based agency West Cary Group (WCG) has named industry veteran Andy Azula executive creative director.

Azula, pictured above, may look familiar. He was the front man for and one of the creatives behind the UPS “White Board” campaign that aired nearly two decades ago. At the time, he was creative director on the UPS account at The Martin Agency.

The idea behind the campaign was to explain UPS’s logistics and business services in a concise way. And the spots featured Azula with a white board and marker explaining those services in plain and simple language.

Director Errol Morris filmed the campaign and Azula wasn’t the first choice to be in front of the camera. Hundreds of actors auditioned for the role but focus groups at the time liked Azula best. And he became known as “the white board guy.”

The campaign ran from 2007 to 2010 and ultimately grew to 52 TV spots before UPS replaced it after moving the account from Martin to Ogilvy & Mather.

Azula was with The Martin Agency (rebranded to Martin) for 15 years and then shifted to sibling agency McCann (both part of IPG and now Omnicom) to help launch m:united, a dedicated agency unit for client Microsoft. He was co-chief creative officer there until 2025.

He began working with West Cary Group earlier this year on a consulting basis prior to his full-time appointment. He will work closely with Debra Fitzgerald, Chief Creative Officer at WCG.

West Cary Group was founded in 2007 by Moses Foster. Capabilities span brand strategy, creative, software engineering, UX, and data analysis. Clients include Capital One, Fannie Mae, Blue Ridge Bank, ABNB Federal Credit Union, MHV Credit Union, City of Philadelphia, Richmond International Airport, and the Virginia Department of Health.
