    The Orlando Police Department has decide to shelve a pilot of Amazon’s Rekognition face recognition software. The move follows a backlash from civil rights groups and Amazon employees, Gizmodo reports. “But while officials say Orlando’s contract with Amazon has expired, they have left the door open to partner with Amazon again,” it notes.
  • Wi-Fi Alliance Supports New Security Protocol
    The Wi-Fi Alliance is beginning to certify products that support WPA3, which succeeds the WPA2 security protocol that’s been in place since 2004. “The new protocol provides a number of additional protections for devices connected over Wi-Fi,” The Verge reports. “One big improvement makes it harder for hackers to crack your password by guessing it over and over again.”

    Facebook just added a TV app to its Oculus Go virtual reality (VR) headset. “Oculus TV is meant to be a one-stop-shop for watching streaming video content in VR,” Variety writes. “However, during a test over the past few days, it became clear that Oculus TV is still very much a work in progress.”
  • Is Instagram Worth Over $100B?
    Were Instagram a stand-alone company, the Facebook unit would be worth more than $100 billion, Bloomberg estimates. That’s about 100 time the $1 billion that Facebook spent to buy Instagram in 2012, Bloomberg points out. Over the next year, “The photo-sharing platform, which reached 1 billion monthly active users earlier this month, will likely help nudge Instagram revenue past $10 billion,” according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Jitendra Waral.

    Facebook is bringing its Messenger Kids app to Canada and Peru, the social giant just announced. “Messenger Kids will now also be made available in Spanish and French in all three of its available markets,” Venture Beat writes. “Messenger Kids originally launched for kids aged 6 to 12 in the U.S. last December, starting with iOS devices.”
  • Reddit Expands 'News' Tab Feature
    After limited testing, Reddit is rolling out its News tab feature to a wider audience. “The News tab will appear in the top left corner of the app with users being able to customize what types of content will show up,” 9To5Mac reports. “Reddit says it has been thoughtful about how the new feature has been integrated, including how it has evolved the News tab during the alpha with user feedback.”

    In another Facebook privacy screwup, roughly 3% of apps using Facebook Analytics had their weekly summary reports sent to outside app’s testers, TechCrunch reports. “Testers are often people outside of a developer’s company,” it writes. “If the leaked info got to an app’s competitors, it could provide them an advantage.” Facebook says it has fixed the problem.
  • Match Takes Majority Stake In 'Hinge'
    Match just acquired a 51% stake in dating app Hinge. The Tinder parent “has the right to acquire the remaining shares in New York-based Hinge over the next 12 months,” Business Insider writes. “Match first took a stake in Hinge in September last year and since then, the app’s user base has grown more than 400%, with particular gains in ‘urban’ markets on the east coast of the US.”
  • Facebook Using AI To Fight Fake News
    Facebook is now using automated systems to identify duplicates of fake news articles previously flagged by third-party reviewers, Bloomberg reports. In other words, “Facebook Inc. is turning to machine-learning technologies to amplify the impact of human fact-checkers reviewing hoax news articles, as part of the company’s efforts to combat the spread of misinformation on its platform,” it writes.
  • Google Adds 'Continued Conversation' To 'Assistant'
    Google is adding a “Continued Conversation” feature to its Assistant offering,” Search Engine Land writes. “Continued Conversation, which is launching today in the US, allows users to have ‘a natural back-and-forth conversation’ with the device without using the wake word trigger each time. The company says this has been one of its top requests from users.”
