Univision Posts Gains Due To Multiplatform, Young Viewers

UnivisionClaiming growing strength among young viewers, Spanish-language media company Univision reported strong net income and slightly higher revenue gains.

Third-quarter revenue rose 1.7% to $584.6 million with slight gains in TV, radio and interactive media revenue, and net income rose more than six times to $290 million, versus a profit of $44.1 million for the same time period a year ago.

"Univision’s solid third-quarter results reflect the continuing strength of our multiplatform properties, including our flagship television network, which beat ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox to rank number one in primetime among adults 18-34 for the entire third quarter," said Univision Communications president chief executive officer Randy Falco.

Univision said it averaged 1.028 million 18-34 viewers to Fox's 1.004 18-34 viewers. NBC had 928,000; ABC, 779,000; CBS, 679,000; and MTV, 612,000.

Falco added: "In addition, we have been managing expenses in a challenging macroeconomic environment and capitalizing on the groundswell of advertiser demand following the 2010 Census.”

Univision, which has already made big retransmission gains versus other English-language networks, said it will be focusing on new revenue streams with retransmission and digital distribution deals. It recently made a big digital deal with Hulu.
