Clear Channel Opens iHeartRadio Platform To Developers

HD-Radio

Clear Channel Radio is opening its digital iHeartRadio platform to developers through a new application programming interface. The move is intended to help build momentum by allowing independent developers to adapt iHeartRadio to various formats and applications.

The iHeartRadio API gives developers access to many of the service’s features, including live broadcast and digital-only stations, custom stations and social media integrations.

CCR has posted developer guidelines, including brand usage guidelines.

The iHeartRadio platform currently offers listeners more than 800 live broadcast and digital-only radio stations -- a number which is set to grow to almost 1,400 stations when new content-sharing deals with Cumulus and Greater Media take effect later this year.

Users can also create their own custom stations, which will remain ad-free until April as part of CCR’s promotional push for the digital audio service. Originally, the ad-free period was scheduled to last only until the end of this year.

CCR is positioning iHeartRadio as a competitor to Pandora by offering music on demand, custom stations and new listening suggestions based on users’ preferences. The company has been working steadily to expand distribution and programming options for iHeartRadio.

In October of last year, CCR signed a deal that brings the online and mobile service to Microsoft's Xbox 360 gaming network. The iHeartRadio platform is available for free to members of Xbox Live Gold, Xbox 360's online entertainment service.
