Cognitive Networks Integrates Advertising Into LG's Smart TV Platform

Cognitive Networks, which has a system that can facilitate interactive advertising, has an arrangement with LG to integrate its product into the manufacturer’s smart TV platform. The system picks up an audio signal from content and then offers a relative interaction opportunity in real-time.

Viewers can use apps to participate in polls, use social media options and order products via the remote control.  

LG is the first TV manufacturer to embed Cognitive’s Engage product, a cloud-based data service that facilitates the interactive triggers. Cognitive has a proprietary automatic content recognition technology that picks up what viewers are watching in live or time-shifted fashion.

LG’s 2012 and 2013 smart TVs will use the enhanced TV system to synchronize with Showtime’s sync app, now available via LG sets.

Helping lead development at Cognitive is Joshua Siegel, who joined recently and previously worked at Hulu in video ingestion and streaming technology. Michael Collette, who has worked at companies such as uCentric Systems and PhyFlex Networks, is Cognitive CEO.

Late last year, Cognitive announced a deal with Visible World to allow its content recognition technology to be used for an app reminding viewers when shows are on. The Visible World app helps networks with promotions, as an overlay can appear on a spot allowing a viewer to set a reminder with the remote. The reminder appears a minute before the show starts
