Apple Customers Spent $1.1 Billion On Apps This Holiday Season

Consumers of Apple products broke the previous single-day sales record on January 1 and the weekly sales record twice during the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.

Consumers spent over $1.1 billion on apps and in-app purchases, solidifying the biggest week for the App Store.

Over $20 billion was spent in the App Store in 2015. As per a statement, Apple has generated nearly $40 billion for developers since 2008, with one-third of that created in the last year.

The announcement is also working as a little bit of damage control after it was revealed that Apple is cutting production of its iPhones in Q1, reducing output by about 30% due to inventories piling up in retail outlets in developed markets.

Shares in Apple dropped 2.5% after reports of the cut as investors worried about slowing shipments.

Apple also touted its place as a job creator the world over, directly supporting 1.9 million jobs in the U.S., 1.2 million in Europe and 1.4 million in China.

Some analysts predict that the slowdown will allow retailers to sell of their iPhone 6S inventory in anticipation of the iPhone 7, which is expected to be a big seller. The company is also having trouble selling in developing countries, where consumers tend to be heavy mobile users, due to the expense of their products.

Apple devices were still the most popular under the tree this Christmas season, accounting for 49.1% of all new device activations, according to Flurry.
