Wikia Spawns Fandom To House Entertainment Content

As one of the top Internet properties, with more than 190 million uniques, Wikia -- which supports about 40 million pages, 13 million articles, and tons of content -- now has a destination that houses all the information.

Fandom -- the latest new media property from Jimmy Wales, founder and chairman of Wikia and Wikipedia -- focuses on entertainment to support the millions of pieces of existing content from Wikia as well as the user-generated content that fans will contribute to the site.

Wales announced the property Monday at the Interactive Advertising Bureau Annual Leadership conference.

Fandom will provide original video, news and features, and curated content -- with a focus on entertainment, Wales told attendees at the conference Monday.

"We're sitting at the cornerstone of the democratization of knowledge," Craig Palmer, president and CEO of Wikia, told Media Daily News.

Wales calls the site a place to go for everything related to pop culture. It will provide a place to house Wikia's millions of pages of content such as plots, characters, timelines, and trivia. An editorial staff will support the content, but journalists and fans will also have the ability to write, report on and contribute content about the entertainment they love.

"It puts fans first," Wales says, explaining how the development team needed to completely rethink how to organize content.
