Vasona Networks, a San Jose, California-based mobile network operator, announced that it has closed a $14.6 million series C funding round. This round brings the company’s total funding to $48 million.

Bessemer Venture Partners, New Venture Partners and NexStar Partners all participated in the round.

Mobile network operators receive ample demand for data services, and Vasona’s products help them allocate their resources more efficiently. One of the company’s products sits between the mobile network core and the radio access network (RAN). It can analyze individual cells, giving more bandwidth based on the nature of the apps in use.

Vasona can also deliver real-time analytics, which provide insights into network congestion, latency and various other performance issues. The company operates globally and is currently partnered with the Telefonica UK’s O2 system in London, as well a number of other large cities around the world.

The company cites emerging challenges as a growth area—the encryption of video and data traffic pose management challenges that can negatively impact network efficiency.

The company is also looking to extend into edge computing, which enables devices to do computations themselves rather than having to send data back to a centralized node for processing.

Many speculate that edge computing will be the key to the Internet of Things not clogging the bandwidth of every mobile network with vast amounts of unprocessed data.
