The New York Times is diving into mobile Spanish-language publishing with the launch of its new
NYT en Español edition of its news app. The app gives visitors access to all
the content published on the newspaper’s Spanish-language Web site,
The New York Times en Español, including original journalism as well as translated versions of a number of
relevant articles from the
NYT’s English-language site.
Content available on NYT en Español spans “crónicas” or narrative
journalism, investigative journalism, opinion pieces and reviews, across a range of formats, including text, photo galleries and video. None of the content accessible on the NYT en
Español app counts toward the monthly limit of 10 free articles per month from the flagship site or app.
That means visitors can consume as much Spanish-language content as they
like. (The newspaper’s Spanish-language Web site also has unlimited access.)
Readers with Android devices who want to access the NYT’s Spanish-language content just have
to open the app’s Settings and switch from English to Spanish. It will also appear as the default NYT app on devices where the user had chosen Spanish as the operating language.
The unlimited access to Spanish-language content offered by the NYT suggests the newspaper is redoubling its efforts to recruit more Spanish-language readers in the U.S. and
internationally.
The newspaper launched its Spanish-language Web site, from which the companion app draws content, back in February of this year.
The New York Times en
Español features content produced by a dedicated editorial team based in Mexico City, as well as the work of NYT correspondents across Latin America and areas with
Spanish-speaking populations, including Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Miami, with additional coverage and oversight from the newspaper’s headquarters in New York City.
The
NYT also introduced a weekly Spanish-language email newsletter, Boletin, around the same time.
