ExxonMobil Breaks Work During Olympics

ExxonMobil is breaking a trio of commercials during the broadcast of the Rio Summer Olympic Games.

Three spots — “To-Do List,” “Carbon Capture Technology” and “Cars (Auto Efficiency) — are part of the brand’s “Energy Lives Here” campaign.

The campaign, from BBDO, focuses on all the different skills and people it takes to help ExxonMobil power the world responsibly. So many, in fact, that the campaign actually features real ExxonMobil employees (as many as 46) talking about a range of challenges, from protecting biodiversity to turning algae into biofuels and capturing carbon emissions, says Alan Jeffers, ExxonMobil media relations manager.

“‘Energy Lives Here’ illustrates how energy is essential to all of us in our daily lives,” Jeffers tells Marketing Daily. “Most people don't have a reason to stop and think about all that it takes to make sure energy is always available and of the work that we do to protect the environment. We're highlighting some of the people who work on that every day and the skills they have — oceanographers, engineers, biochemists.”

The wide reach of the Olympics is the appropriate media buy for the effort, he says.

“This is a global message so it makes sense to deliver it in programming of a global scale,”  Jeffers says.

ExxonMobil is proud of its employees, and they are proud of the work they do and were excited to participate in the campaign, he says.

“We're helping people understand that we're working on new technology to further reduce environmental impacts by talking about research into algae-based fuels and better ways to capture carbon dioxide — and how we're helping consumers reduce their environmental footprint, too,” Jeffers says.
