Speaking at the network’s upfront presentation on Wednesday at Carnegie Hall, Jo Ann Ross, president of advertising sales for CBS Television Network, said the network is starting CBS Customized Data Solutions. It will offer custom audience segments, large-scale and one-to-one addressability across all CBS’ owned digital channels.
“And we will back this up with credible measurement,” she says.
Recently, three major TV/media companies -- Fox Networks Group, Turner and Viacom -- announced a consortium called Open AP, which among other things, looks to standardized new audience segments for advertisers, beyond current age and gender measures.
During her upfront remarks, Ross also promoted CBS’ continued effort with Internet media researcher Moat. “We are pleased to hear our industry counterparts are catching in their utilization with Moat, which CBS was among the first to partner with years ago.”

Both NBC and Fox during their upfront presentations announced deals with Moat. Networks will use the Moat Video Score to measure digital video exposures.
As with other upfront network presentations, Ross also said one key reason that TV advertisers keep coming back to traditional linear TV from digital media is brand safety. “Premium broadcast content goes hand in hand with a solid return on investment,” she says.
Chairman/CEO of CBS Corp Les Moonves said CBS remains the leader in overall prime-time viewers for the 14th time in 15 years, and nine years in a row.
Season-to-date, CBS is averaging a TV broadcast network leading 9.7 million viewers in prime time through May 14 looking at Nielsen’s live program plus seven days of time shifting metric and live program same day metric for the most recent week.
For next season CBS will start eight new TV shows this season -- six of those will start up this fall.
A big one for CBS could be “Big Bang Theory” spinoff -- “Young Sheldon,” focusing on “Big Bang” character Sheldon Cooper, as 9-year-old genius growing up in East Texas.
“Big Bang Theory” will continue at an early-season shift -- due to “Thursday Night Football.” It’ll start on Mondays at 8 p.m. -- along with “Young Sheldon,” running at 8:30 p.m. Then both will to Thursdays at 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. respectively after CBS’ “Thursday Night Football” programming ends in November.
Two new comedies will start on Monday: “9JKL,” stars Mark Feuerstein as an actor, newly single, returning home and living in an apartment with his parents and his competitive brother. It is slotted for 8:30 p.m.
“Me, Myself, & I” is about a man’s life over three periods – a 14-year-old, a 40-year old, and a 65-year old. It will start at Mondays at 9 p.m and then move to 9:30 p.m. on the same night.
A new hour-long military drama “Seal Team” will get the 9 p.m. Wednesday time period. “S.W.A.T,” a new version of a old TV/entertainment franchise, will run at Thursdays at 10 p.m. On Sunday at 8 p.m., drama “Wisdom of the Crowd” is about a tech innovator who creates a crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter’s murder.
Other shows that will appear later this season: “Instinct,” which stars Alan Cumming as a former CIA operative who is lured back to his old life; and “By The Book,” a comedy about a man at a crossroads in his life who decides to live strictly in accordance with the Bible.
