Marriott Gets Creative In Shower

Marriott Hotels is testing a one-of-a-kind technology that allows guests to sketch their ideas in the shower and then digitally transfer the images to their devices.

Developed with agencies Grey and Endeavor Global Marketing through Catalyst PR, Marriott is currently piloting the experience for two months at the hotel's Irvine, California location.

The "Splash of Brilliance" shower door technology works by turning shower steam into a canvas on the door. Guests use their finger to write or draw images and touch-sensitive technology built into the shower door will then transfer the idea onto a tablet, where guests can share it via email or their social media platforms.

Marriott will determine any further rollout based on usage, feedback and satisfaction scores from guests staying in these pilot rooms.

The concept was derived from Marriott's recent survey of business travelers. It found that when at home, inspiration is most likely to strike while you’re in the shower (51%). "We are constantly looking for new ways to use technology to enhance our guest experience," says Matthew Carroll, vice president and global brand manager, Marriott Hotels.

He cited the addition of a partnership with TED to provide curated content through the Marriott's in-room entertainment and when guests log onto the hotel's Wi-Fi. All are designed to stimulate "inspirational moments."

Most of these ideas were first hatched at the 14-month-old M Beta hotel in Charlotte, NC, known as the industry's first hotel innovation incubator. "Marriott Hotels promises to embrace the pace of change," says Carroll.
