More than 200 million hearables or ear-based wearables will be shipping annually by 2022, according to a new forecast by Juniper Research.
The category will be led primarily be an expanding multimedia hearables category. Multimedia hearables include Apple AirPods, Bose QuietComfort 35 and Google Pixel Buds.
Juniper defines a hearable as “an ear-mounted device that supplies aural content or information to the wearer, that is either generated by computations and data on the device itself or by an attached app.”
“However, the technology is not yet a ‘must-have’ for consumers and not cheap enough to encourage impulse buying beyond early adopters,” states the report.
By 2023, there will be 441 million wireless headphones in use along with 423 million hearables, according to the forecast.
All wireless audio devices use Bluetooth to connect to a parent device.
