Adland Veteran, Agency Owner Barbara Gardner Proctor Dies at 86

A self-made woman who was born poor in rural North Carolina, Gardner Proctor is credited with being the first African-American woman to open up her own ad agency at a time (around 1970) when women and minorities had very little sway in Adland, The New York Times reports.
