IPG Taps Lee As CEO Of Mediabrands, Kiernan Succeeds Him As UM Chief

As the fifth CEO of IPG Mediabrands, Daryl Lee takes over day-to-day leadership of one of the world’s biggest and most diversified media services portfolios, succeeding Philippe Krakowsky, who becomes COO of parent Interpublic, and heir apparent to Chairman-CEO Michael Roth.

Lee, who most recently served as CEO of Mediabrands’ UM unit, now assumes oversight of its entire portfolio, including Initiative, Cadreon, Reprise, Orion, Rapport, Healix and media negotiation and intelligence division Magna.

Lee, who originally joined UM in 2006 as head of global strategy, joined Interpublic from Ogilvy, where he was a group director of its Marketing Strategy Group. He began his career as a consultant in McKinsey & Co.’s New York City offices.

During his tenure at UM, he fostered a culture based on the mission statement: “Better Science and Better Art delivers Better Outcomes.”

Originally conceived by Nick Brien (now CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network), in 2008, Mediabrands has had a series of chiefs including Matt Seiler, Henry Tajer, and most recently Krakowsky, who served as chairman-CEO.

In a related move, Interpublic named Eileen Kiernan global CEO of UM from global president of its J3, the media shop's dedicated media services units for client Johnson & Johnson.
