Netflix Tests Function That Automatically Chooses Programming For Users

Netflix is testing a “Shuffle Play” feature that, when activated, automatically chooses a lineup of programming for users, using algorithms that reflect their viewing habits.

Netflix is testing the feature on a portion of its global subscriber base, with some users seeing a “Shuffle Play” activation button on their main screens and others seeing it in the menu area at the left side of the screen, according to Next TV.

The button is the latest in a series of Netflix tests of auto-choice and other content discovery concepts (screensavers, on-screen promotions, etc.) aimed at addressing streaming services subscribers’ most-heard, cancellation-driving complaint: the difficulty of finding content they want to watch.

The tests will help Netflix determine if Shuffle Play is the long-sought solution worthy of being rolled out to its millions of customers.
