ViacomCBS Strikes Cable Network Carriage Deal With Hulu + Live TV

ViacomCBS’ 14 cable TV networks got a major boost due to a multi-year deal to be carried on Hulu + Live TV -- the biggest virtual multichannel video programmer service.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Viacom’s cable networks already have deals with AT&T TV Now, Sling, Philo, fuboTV, T-Mobile, and most recently, YouTube TV.

Viacom cable networks include: BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, VH1, CMT, Nick Jr., TV Land, BET Her, MTV2, NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic.

Hulu + Live TV has an existing deal with CBS Television Stations (which carries the CBS Television Network) as well as CBS Sports Network, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel, The CW, and Showtime.

Walt Disney said that as of the third quarter, Hulu + Live TV has 4.1 million subscribers. That would make it tops among all vMVPDs. YouTube TV recently announced it has three million subscribers. Dish’s Sling TV has 2.46 million subscribers.

Major cable networks groups have seen erosion over the past few years -- with major established cable networks sinking anywhere from 2% to 4% per year in subscribers when it comes to carriage on major traditional pay TV services -- cable, satellite and telco.

As of the third quarter of 2020, MoffettNathanson Research estimated vMVPDs have grown 20% to 11.5 million subscribers over the same period the year before. By contrast, traditional pay TV providers declined to 7.4% to 78.0 million subscribers.
