Consumers Expect Free Shipping For Online Orders, Study Finds

Ecommerce brands planning an email series should know that free delivery remains the top consumer priority, according to Jungle Scout’s Consumer Trends Report Q2 2021. 

A whopping 80% of online shoppers expect free shipping when ordering over a certain dollar amount, and 66% want it for all orders. Moreover, 91% expect online orders to be delivered in a week, and 9% on the same day, and 27% on the same day or the next day. 

People are planning to change certain behaviors after the COVID-19 pandemic. 

For instance, only 26% expect to purchase goods online, compared to 39% who did so during the last 12 months.  

And 38% have had enough of cooking at home, although 50% have been doing this in the past year.

There is a similar decline in those who order groceries online — from 30% to 20%. And 29% expect to eat healthy, down from 34% during the most intense period of the pandemic crisis. 

Here are consumers’ expectations when ordering online: 

  • I’m influenced by the product with the best ratings/reviews — 70% 
  • I’m looking for the product with the lowest price — 67%
  • I’m influenced by product ratings/reviews that contain photos or videos — 67% 
  • I’m looking for the product with the most impressive features — 59%
  • I consider purchasing products that are recommended for me — 58% 
  • I prefer shopping from retailers that offer flexible delivery options — 58% 
  • I’d be willing to spend more for a product for faster shipping — 47%
  • I prefer shopping from retailers that offer flexible or other payment options — 45%
  • I often use deal-finding browser extensions or plug-ins — 44%
  • I’m looking for pre-owned products — 32%

Meanwhile, among online shoppers, 32% are seeking pre-owned items, and 44% have bought or sold them in the last year. Among those, 66% have bought or sold pre-owned products via Amazon. 

They have ordered — or sold — the following secondhand items:

  • Clothing — 41%
  • Books — 33%
  • Electronics — 30%
  • Furniture — 24% 
  • Jewelry — 23%
  • Sporting goods — 22%
  • Watches — 22%
  • Tools and home care items — 21%
  • Exercise equipment — 20%
  • Bikes — 16%
  • Musical instruments — 14%
  • Cars — 13%
  • Other — 9%

Jungle Scout surveyed 1,066 consumers from April 16-19, 2021.
