Cannes Festival Reboots Media Lions: Adds Metaverse For 'New Realities,' 'Emerging Tech'

The annual Cannes Lions awards festival this morning unveiled a reboot for next year’s awards including “refreshes” to major categories, the addition of new categories and expanding its campaign submission period to 14 months ending April 23, 2023.

festival“The Media Lions [category] have undergone a second phase refresh for 2023 to ensure the award accurately reflects the current media industry, and celebrates the craftsmanship of harnessing media to deliver a brand message, change behavior or engage consumers at scale,” the festival’s organizers explain in this morning’s announcement.

The category’s criteria will be weighted 30% for “insight and idea,” 30% for “media strategy and targeting,” 20% for “media execution,” and 20% for “impact and results.”

In addition, the organizers said entries for the “excellence in media craft” subcategory can only be submitted and paid for by independent media agencies or companies owned by a media network or independent media network.

The festival announced similar refreshes for other major categories and unveiled a new “entertainment Lions for gaming,” and said it will introduce the metaverse into categories focused on “new realities” and “emerging tech.”

“For the purposes of the awards, the use of the metaverse is defined as ‘the creative application of immersive experiences which creatively push the boundaries of technology’,” the announcement said.
