Microsoft Makes Multibillion-Dollar Investment In Maker Of ChatGPT

Microsoft announced a multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment in ChatGPT maker OpenAI on Monday.

The company did not disclose the size of the investment, but previous reports placed the dollar amount at $10 billion.

The investment aims to “accelerate AI breakthroughs to ensure these benefits are broadly shared with the world,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

The investment demonstrates the resources Microsoft will put toward artificial intelligence across its network of products and services, from search in Bing to cloud services.

The announcement follows previous investments in 2019 and 2021, and extends the ongoing collaboration across AI supercomputing and research. It also should enable both companies to independently commercialize the resulting advanced AI technologies.

Microsoft vows to increase investments in the development and deployment of supercomputing systems to accelerate OpenAI’s independent AI research, and the continued buildout of Azure’s AI infrastructure.

The plan is to deploy OpenAI’s models across its consumer and enterprise products and introduce new categories of digital experiences built on OpenAI’s technology, including Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service.

Azure also will power all OpenAI workloads across research, products and API services, as the company’s exclusive cloud provider.
