Dentsu Tees Up PGA Movie, Taps 'Despicable' Producer To Make It

The Professional Golf Association (PGA) of America has tapped Dentsu to produce an animated feature film in which golf is portrayed as the "hero" in a multi-sport narrative based in a fictional world of "SportsCity."

Dentsu Entertainment has tapped John Cohen -- producer of "Despicable Me," "The Angry Birds Movie," and "The Garfield Movie" -- to create the film.

Details of the production, including how it will anthropomorphize the sport of golf were not disclosed, but Dentsu said it will play a key role in the development of the initial movie, as well as leading the "commercial strategy and brand engagement around the broader transmedia IP opportunity."

The project appears to be aimed at cultivating youth engagement for golf, which already has been a major focus of the PGA, including its PGA Jr. League program for boys and girls.

As part of the announcement, the agency disclosed findings of a recent Dentsu survey of CMOs indicating that 88% believe it is "more important than ever to be part of culture," but 74% find it challenging.

"The creative team have crafted a classic sports story that culminates with a drama-filled sports showdown," says Scott Dmitrenko, the creator of the original story and a producer on the project, noting: "In true sports-film fashion, the story will pull at your heartstrings, inspire your soul and provide hilarious entertainment."

Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
