RSN Remedy: NBCU's Peacock Streaming Add-On Access

Navigating a tougher business world of regional sports networks (RSNs), NBCUniversal is now offering its regional sports channels under its main Peacock premium streaming platform -- as add-on subscriptions.

RSNs include NBC Sports Bay Area, which can be added for $17.95/month; NBC Sports Boston ($14.95/month); NBC Sports California ($17.95/month); or NBC Sports Philadelphia ($24.95).

These can be added to the Peacock’s specific packages -- Premium ($7.99/mo.) or Premium-Plus ($13.99/mo.)

Local market professional teams include MLB’s San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies; NBA’s Boston Celtics, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers; and NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks, and other college and sports content.

This follows other recent moves to boost troubled RSN business. Just in time for the start of Major League Baseball season, DirecTV has added regional sports networks to its MySports "skinny bundle" in 18 markets -- with these RSNs also as add-ons.

MySports "skinny" bundle has an initial discounted price of $49.99/month for the first three months ( $69.99 per month thereafter). It includes national cable TV networks (ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, FS2, ACC Network, Big Ten Network, SEC Network, Golf Channel) as well as local broadcast channels, and possibly some news channels. It does not include traditional cable TV entertainment channels.

Through DirecTV’s MyHome Team’s, subscribers can pay a $19.99 add-on monthly fee -- comparable to other streaming RSN pricing.

Linear regional sports networks have been slammed with financial issues over the recent years due to non-stop cord-cutting by media consumers -- around 10% annual drop of subscribers per year -- who have trimmed back on their overall monthly entertainment spending.
