Pantalones Tequila: Celebrating Matthew McConnaughey's Pantsless Past

The date Oct. 25, 1999, may not mean much to most people, but to actor Matthew McConnaughey and his fans, the date is as burned into their minds as whatever he was smoking that night.

It was on that day that McConnaughey had a beachside run-in with the Malibu police department, along with his bongos, but sans any clothing. The hilarious episode was immortalized on news and gossip sites around the world, but all charges were eventually dropped.

Now McConnaughey and his wife Camila are commemorating the epic run-in with a new online spot, seen here, for their Pantalones Organic Tequila. The spot opens on a very familiar title card and voiceover, styled like an episode of “Law & Order,” complete with voiceover actor Steve Zirnkilton, the actual voice behind the show’s into.

“What follows is a real police report," says Zirnkilton. "No names have been changed 'cause he was totally guilty."

The spot proceeds as a dramatic reading, by Camila, of McConnaughey’s arrest report from that Malibu night, while he accompanies her on his bongos.  "On the 25th day of October," Camila says. "2:36 in the A.M." he says. When Camila responds, "report says 2:37," Matthew replies: "They were tardy."

"Glassy and very bloodshot eyes," Camila continued to describe how police saw McConnaughey, to which he responds,  "And?"

As the camera pulls back Camila jokes, "Why can I see this so clearly?" He humorously responds. "Because it's happened about 45 times since."  Zirnkilton’s VO closes the spot with "Please bongo responsibly."

(McConnaughey’s mother, Mary Kathleen McCabe McConaughey, was quoted at the time by People magazine saying “You go outside in front of that media and you hold your head high. I know what you were doing last night playing bongos, smoking that funny stuff in your birthday suit, and you've done it many times before and I know you're going to do it again.”)

“The Official Tequila of Marching to Your Own Beat” (as the brand refers to itself) also added a new cocktail, the “Pantsless & Famous” to its website, seen here, to further commemorate the infamous incident.

Separately, the brand also recently added Pantalones Organic Tequila bottle Halloween costumes to its merch site for $34.99. The oversized costumes were inspired by Matthew and Camila’s viral outfits from 2024.
