America's Mood Sours, Most Say Country Is On 'The Wrong Track'

The overall mood in the country has deteriorated further, exacerbated by economic disruptions and the just-ended and longest government shutdown in history, according to the latest Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll.

Fifty-four percent of those surveyed said the country is on “the wrong track,” up 3 percentage points from September. And 58% said the US economy is on the wrong track -- up 5 points.

Being stressed about finances (41%) is the top concern currently, followed by food security (35%). Rounding out the top 5 concerns (all at 33%) are: affordable and safe housing, building up savings and physical and mental health.

The survey was conducted online between November 4-6 among 2,000 registered U.S. voters by Stagwell’s The Harris Poll and HarrisX.

The poll also showed that Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a new low: 44%, down 2 points from September. And it has fallen below 50% for all key issues including fighting crime in cities (49%) and immigration (47%), where Trump gets his highest ratings.

A majority of voters (56%) say Trump has exceeded his authority as president. And most (51%) also believe he acts more like a “fascist dictator” than a “strong president.”

3 in 5 describe the recent election results to be a negative reaction to Trump, including Zohran Mamdani's election in New York.
