It’s official: Mr. Clean is finally
calling it quits after 68 years.
The cartoon spokesman for Procter & Gamble cleaning products including the Magic Eraser announced on Instagram and TikTok that he is
retiring.
"After a career with zero stains on the record, he's ready for new adventures,” according to a social media post. “But don't worry, his products will
continue to be available to support all your cleaning needs.”
The press conference was depicted as a live stream, with one user in the video commenting, "End of an era!"
“And he's already on island time,” according to E! News. “While Mr.
Clean—who was introduced by the company in 1957—opted for a blue Hawaiian button-down at the press conference, his iconic white shirt was displayed in a frame alongside the
podium. He concluded the meeting with a mic drop, although he was sure to wipe down the equipment before exiting.”

Mr. Clean was created in the mid-1950s by artist Richard
Black.
“The brand’s plans for a successor are not clear, nor is it known whether Mr. Clean has children to inherit the role. A decade ago, the brand similarly
said it was sending its character on an extended vacation and was in the market for a new Mr. — or Ms. or Mrs. — Clean,” according to The New York Times.
Mr. Clean has been the face of the brand
since its 1958 rollout, which included a radio and television ad campaign, and has been a staple on cleaning shelves in grocery stores and American homes.
“Mr. Clean's
‘retirement,’ according to the Procter & Gamble-owned brand, is tied to an announcement coming March 4,” according to USA Today. “Brands like Instacart and Old Spice wished Mr. Clean well,
writing in the comments that he would be missed.”
