
Netflix is planning to launch a reality
competition called “Monopoly" with a $2 million prize.
“The project marks Netflix’s latest push into unscripted adaptations of familiar franchises, following
‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ and the upcoming ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket,’ which premieres Sept. 23,” according to USA Today. “The show will drop contestants into a fully
built Monopoly Town Square, where every roll, negotiation and deal could determine whether they build an empire or go bankrupt. Officials say players will start on equal footing, but that balance
won’t last long. As in the original game, fortunes can swing fast -- and one wrong move could send a contestant directly to jail.”

Netflix won the rights to produce a
reality show based on Monopoly back in 2025, according to Fast
Company.
Casting has begun for the life-size adaptation of the classic real estate game that will feature 12 players and premiere in fall 2027.
Those
interested can visit the official casting page. To apply, candidates must complete a registration form and upload
a 1-minute video explaining who they are, why they want to compete and how they’d play the game. At least two recent photos -- a headshot and full-length image -- are required.
“Competing on a life-sized Monopoly Town Square, 12 players will use strategy, alliance and dealmaking to take home the prize,” according to Variety. “With opportunities to earn money, buy properties and negotiate
deals, the contestants must work to stay afloat as the bankrupt players get eliminated, with only one player left standing.”
Hasbro has also announced a deal with Lionsgate
and LuckyChap to produce a film based on “Monopoly,” with the studio and Margot Robbie’s production company looking to build on the success they had with the Mattel property
“Barbie,” according to Variety.
“Monopoly has been around for more than 90 years (and was inspired by games that date to the early 1900s) and has
basically always been popular,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Monopoly
Go!, a mobile-phone version of the game, has tens of millions of downloads since it launched in 2023. The board game has also been the basis for a couple of relatively short-lived TV game shows, in
1990 and 2015."
