“The Health System Wasn’t Built For Them, So Women Are
Building Their Own.”
So declares the cover page of “The New Health
Ecosystem,” a report from Reddit and Omnicom’s The Weber Shandwick Collective, which declares that Reddit “has quietly become an epicenter for women's health.”
Marking its second year of publication, the new study “leans more on how the content discovery journey has changed and how online communities are offering unfiltered candor and anonymity that
traditional networks often cannot provide,” Kathleen Hunter, Weber Shandwick’s executive vice president of client experience, tells Marketing Daily.
That candor and
anonymity, she says, helps to close “the experiential gap: the void that exists between clinical literature, often grounded in male-centric studies, and what women are actually looking for (the
lived experience of conditions and life stages they are experiencing).”

Hunter points to one study finding: “When it comes to sensitive health topics, women on Reddit are now more
comfortable discussing their bodies on the platform (81%) than with their own friends and family (72%).”
In addition to leveraging Reddit, women are also integrating AI tools like
ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude to close the experiential gap, Hunter says.
“For example, AI-driven searches on Reddit grew by 15x,” she notes, and “those who turn to Reddit for
health information are three times more likely to cross-reference the data using LLMs [large learning models such as the AI tools noted above] compared to social media users who do not use
Reddit.”
After using Reddit, Hunter continues, “70% of women feel more prepared for future healthcare conversations: from seeking what symptoms actually feel like(61%), and
what isnormal versus concerning(55%), women are stepping into the doctor’s office with deep, community-vetted knowledge, thanks to Reddit and LLMs.”
Health brands should
become part of women’s current “content discovery journey with earned, owned and social content to help address the specific qualitative questions they are asking in community forums
and on LLMs,” the report recommends.
Results of the Reddit survey, conducted in April of 866 U.S. women and their partners, also generated some generational tidbits:
The report
found that both Millennials and Gen Xers are “sharing the earliest signs of perimenopause and how to navigate new issues as others enter this life stage.”
Furthermore, Gen
Xers -- “feeling blindsided by middle age” – are “offering radical transparency on social media, community-driven ‘crowdsourcing’ of medical evidence, and a
rejection of the ‘suffer in silence’ mandate followed by previous generations,” the study states.
Marketers, the authors suggest, should “lean into transparency across
life stages” by helping to “destigmatize perimenopause, menopause and postpartum challenges. Validate their experiences, demystify the symptoms they are going through, and equip them with
the language and questions to best partner with their HCPs [healthcare providers].”
