'Brand New Day' Soars With Second-Highest Box Office Ever

Topping the charts for the fifth consecutive weekend, Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” pulled in $22 million, according to Comscore.

The movie has earned a total of $891.5 million domestically -- with the second-highest domestic box-office revenue result ever. “Star Wars: Episode VII--The Force Awakens” (2015) had the highest domestic box-office revenue at $936.6 million.

Strong, positive major audience and critic scores for the hybrid animated “Coyote vs. Acme” lifted North American box-office results to $15.5 million over the recent weekend --the strongest-performing movie of the weekend.

The film, which blends live-action from human actors with computer animation from the original cartoon characters, was released by Ketchup Entertainment.

It was originally housed at the brand’s Warner Bros. studio home, and was intended to have a major airing on HBO Max.

National TV ad spend was a minuscule $86,625 driven by 242 airings and resulting in 54.5 million impressions, according to iSpot estimates.

Audiences gave the movie an "A’" according to CinemaScore. Critics took the same route, with a 95% approval rating.

In third place, Universal Pictures' “The Odyssey” landed in third place at $14.3 million -- with a cumulative $563.8 million domestically through seven weekends.

Another new film start, “The Dog Stars” from Walt Disney/20th Century Studios, opened to a weak $8 million domestically.

Audiences gave it a modest 70% approval rating, while critics were mostly thumbs down at 41%, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Total national TV ad spend was estimated at $3.95 million (1,789 airings, 256.8 million impressions), according to iSpot.
