Virgin America, Google Hand Out Chromebooks

VirginAmerica

Virgin America, which was one of the first airlines to offer WiFi across the entire fleet of its planes, is teaming up with Google to give passengers a chance to preview the companies' Chromebook computers.

Between July 1 and Sept. 30, Virgin America passengers flying between San Francisco and Boston, Chicago or Dallas-Fort Worth will be able to check out a Chromebook to use on their flight -- along with free WiFi, provided by Google. The gates for those flights will include "Chrome Zone" lounges where they can learn about the computers and check one out for use on the flight. Google and Virgin America have previously worked together on a promotion where Google financed passengers' in-flight WiFi during the holiday travel season.

"Our goal has always been to use the best in technology to reinvent the travel experience -- and help bring some fun back to flying," said Porter Gale, vice president of marketing for Virgin America, in a release. "We're delighted to team up with Google yet again in a way that keeps our guests entertained and connected -- in both the physical and virtual clouds."

The two companies are also developing an app to run on the Google Chrome system. The Virgin America Traveler app will help travelers prepare for trips by providing packing lists and help them plan future journeys, using information from UrbanDaddy.

In addition, Virgin America has launched a Facebook sweepstakes, "Get Away with a Chromebook," in which one person will win a two-day trip to New York (staying at the Ace Hotel in Midtown), as well as a Chromebook and 30-day pass to use WiFi on Virgin America flights.
