Google Taps Goodby's Spanier As First Director Of Media

Joshua Spanier, who as director of communications strategy at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners obliterated the agency's media department, fusing it with its strategy group and making it the envy of Madison Avenue, is getting back to media -- this time on the client side. But not just any client: Spanier is joining Google as director of media.

"I am equal part excited and freaked out," Spanier told Online Media Daily, noting that the director of media role is new at Google, and still largely undefined.

Christine Chen, who has served as Goodby's deputy director of communication strategy, reporting to Spanier for the past three years, will succeed him.

During Spanier and Chen's regime, MEDIA magazine selected Goodby as its "Media Department of the Year" (even though the agency claimed it no longer had a media department) for three successive years, until last year, when it recognized the agency's media team as its first "Media Department of the Perennial."

I wish Josh every ounce of good luck. They've been looking to fill the position for 2+ years and good on him!
