Summly Built Into Updated Yahoo App

Yahoo made a splash last month when it acquired Summly, the startup launched by U.K.-based 17-year-old Nick D’Aloisio. On Monday, the company released an updated version of its flagship iOS app (in the U.S.) that incorporates technology from the Summly app, which was pulled from the App Store at the time of the acquisition.

The Web portal made good on its promise then that the Summly would “come to life through Yahoo’s mobile experience soon.” The new Yahoo app shows Summly-style summaries of news stories that link to full versions of articles. The summaries appear in an infinite-scrolling news feed that superimposes text over accompanying story images.

The app also offers improved search for video and images and the ability to select stories by topic and share them via Facebook and Twitter. The upgrade adapting Summly follows on the heels of the company last week rolling out a new Yahoo Mail app for tablets and a new weather app for the iPhone and iPod as part of its broader mobile push.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer last week also said the company has entered a new phase in which it plans to introduce new mobile and products at a faster pace. She also indicated Yahoo would continue to snap up innovative startups like Summly that can be quickly and easily integrated into its operations.
