Discovery Inc. Expands OTT Push, Strikes Deals With Sling TV, Hulu

Discovery Inc., the parent company of Discovery Channel, Food Network, TLC, and HGTV, is expanding its presence on streaming video services.

This week, the company struck deals with Dish’s Sling TV and Hulu with Live TV, bringing some of its channels to the streaming channel bundles.

In the case of Sling, Discovery Channel, Investigation Discovery, Motor Trend Channel and TLC will be available in its basic “Blue” and “Orange” plans, while Science Channel, American Heroes Channel, Destination America and the company’s Spanish-language channels will be available in add-on packages.

Some of the company’s channels that were previously owned by Scripps Networks, such as Food Network and HGTV, were already available on Sling.

At Hulu, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Motor Trend and Investigation Discovery will be added to the basic tier -- with Destination America, Science Channel, American Heroes Channel, Discovery Life, Discovery Family and the Spanish-language channels available in add-on packages.

As with Sling, some former Scripps channels -- including Food Network and HGTV -- were already available on the service.

Discovery was slow to join many streaming bundles when they first launched a few years ago. With the two deals announced this week, its channels are now on almost all the major streaming bundles, and only YouTube TV has not made them available.

Discovery has also become an investor in the entertainment-focused bundle Philo, which carries its channels and has announced its plans to launch a global golf OTT service in 2019.
