Salesforce has hired Paula Goldman as its first chief ethical and humane use officer. She starts January 7, 2019.

Goldman will head the company’s new office of ethical and humane use, reporting to Tony Prophet, chief equality officer for Salesforce. In that role, she will develop a strategic framework for the ethical and humane use of technology throughout the company.

One issue that is likely to come up is the company’s contract with the U.S. Custom and Border Protection (CDP). The CBP has deployed Salesforce Analytics Community Cloud and service cloud to modernize its recruiting process, manage border activities and engagement with citizens. This has resulted in an outpouring of criticism.

In a tweet last July, Co-CEO Mark Benioff wrote: “Our employees asked me to review how CBP uses us & I included them…Salesforce doesnt work with CBP regarding separation of families at the border. We dont have an agreement with ICE.”

In her most recent role, Goldman has been vice president, Global Lead Technology at Omidyar Network. She also has served on Salesforce’s Advisory Council for the Office of Ethical and Humane Use.

Goldman is also the founder and director of Imagining Ourselves, a project of the International Museum of Women 

“Paula has extensive entrepreneurial experience managing frontier market businesses, ranging from managing an affordable private school in rural India to a micro-enterprise syndicate in post-war Bosnia,” Prophet states.
