Twitch Hires Hulu Vet Phillipson As Executive Creative Director

Twitch, the Amazon-owned livestreaming video platform, has named Byron Rex Phillipson executive creative director.

In his new role, Phillipson will lead the marketing team responsible for brand, product, digital and experiential marketing at Twitch. He will be based in San Francisco and report to Twitch CMO Kate Jhaveri.

He joins Twitch from Hulu, where he was the lead for marketing creative, with oversight of the Hulu brand, culture, live TV and sports. In particular, he helped with the design and creative vision for Hulu with Live TV, the company’s live streaming bundle.

Before Hulu, Phillipson worked for Huge Inc. in Los Angeles, working on campaigns for companies like Nike, Apple, Amazon, and Google.

While Twitch is widely known in video game circles — it has become the de facto home for gamers looking to livestream to fans — it is also trying to broaden its reach to new consumers and markets.

In a statement, Phillipson alluded to that trajectory, noting he hoped to reach a “broader audience.”

“It’s a big and exciting opportunity to build an iconic brand that already has deep connections to a massive, global community,” Phillipson says. “There is a huge breadth of creativity and spontaneity happening on Twitch every day," he notes, adding he will "continue to elevate those creators and moments to a broader audience.”
