SMS Usage Boomed During Cyber Week

Email was not the only channel to see a boom during the Black Friday through Cyber Monday holiday period. Some reports put volume in the billions.

SMS traffic also rose by 30% from November 22 through November 29, Sinch reports.

In addition, the SMS send doubled in over 50 countries during Cyber Week.

Email paled in comparison in terms of growth -- with 19% more emails sent during Cyber Week 2022 compared to 2021.

In addition, Cyber Week volumes through conversational messaging channels like WhatsApp and KakaoTalk increased by more than 560% compared to the previous week.

Sinch’s global network handled more than 400 million messages on Black Friday -- with 4,630 messages for every second of the day.

A separate report by Twilio SendGrid showed 30% growth for Black Friday email volume YoY and 26% for Cyber Monday.

That firm processed a record 8.8 billion emails on Black Friday and 8.9 billion on Cyber Monday -- the equivalent of 1+ emails for every person on the planet during each day. The total for the full holiday week of November 21-28 was 50 billion emails.

And a separate report from Bloomreach states that Bloomreach Engagement sent 331 million emails for clients, a 72% YoY. In addition, marketers sent 3.7 SMS messages, 30% over the volume in 2021, and 145,000 MMS messages, a 590% lift YoY.

There also was a hike in ad retargeting -- Bloomreach deployed 306 million  ads, a 9% increase over the prior year.

Sinch is the parent company of Pathwire, an email delivery platform that includes the Mailgun, Mailjet and Email on Acid brands.
