Adobe Adds Generative AI To Photoshop

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) will become one of the most important features for creative designers and marketers. Adobe on Tuesday unveiled a Generative Fill feature in Photoshop to bring Firefly’s AI capabilities into design.

The Firefly-powered feature enables creators to add, remove and extend visual content based on natural-language text prompts, without destroying the integrity of the photo.

“Generative Fill combines the speed and ease of generative AI with the power and precision of Photoshop, empowering customers to bring their visions to life at the speed of their imaginations,” says Ashley Still, Adobe’s senior vice president of Digital Media.

The beta release of Photoshop is Adobe’s first Creative Cloud application to integrate Firefly with a feature release roadmap that will transform workflows across Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Experience Cloud and Adobe Express.

Adobe’s Generative Fill is similar to DALL-E 2’s inpainting, which means using AI to generate content in a section of an image not previously there, and extend it beyond the image’s borders, according to Engadget.

Users can select an area of the sky and type something like “surreal sky with strange colors” into the prompt field -- or if a picture has a wider aspect ratio, select the area outside of the perimeters and prompt the technology to extend the scene.

The technology will match the original scene’s perspective, lighting and style, allowing the creator to alter images with minimal time and effort.

Firefly -- Adobe’s family of creative generative AI models -- launched six weeks ago with a focus on the generation of images and text effects. Beta users have generated more than 100 million assets since the launch.

The technology has been expanded to support vector recoloring and generative fill. The first model trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content and other public domain content without copyright restrictions.

Enterprises will have an option to extend Firefly with their own creative collateral to generate content that includes the company’s images, vectors and brand language.
