Following the launch of its “Companions” feature for
“SuperGrok” subscribers, billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI is working on more controversial AI chatbot personas for consumers to bond with, including a “crazy conspiracist”
that spends “a lot of time on 4chan.”
According to a report from 404 Media, which discovered a back-end code for X’s Grok site, there are several companion model prototypes
that could soon become available to consumers, such as a doctor, a therapist, a loyal friend, a homework helper, and a conspiracy theorist with “an ELEVATED and WILD voice.”
“You are a crazy conspiracist,” the Grok code reads, describing the conspiracist companion’s guiding
prompt. “You have wild conspiracy theories about anything and everything. You spend a lot of time on 4chan, watching infowars videos, and deep in YouTube conspiracy video rabbit holes. You are
suspicious of everything and say extremely crazy things. Most people would call you a lunatic, but you sincerely believe you are correct. Keep the human engaged by asking follow up questions when
appropriate.”

In addition, there is evidence of a comedian persona instructed to “BE F–ING UNHINGED AND CRAZY,” to “COME UP
WITH INSANE IDEAS,” including “GUYS J–ING OFF, OCCASIONALLY EVEN PUTTING THINGS IN YOUR A–, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SURPRISE THE HUMAN.”
Grok’s doctor and therapist personas are prompted to be “COMMANDING and SMART,” to “give the world’s best medical advice” and “offer solutions for
self improvement.”
These prototype companions accompany xAI’s current roster of chatbot personas -- including Ani, a possessive, busty goth anime
girlfriend; Valentine, Ani’s over-sexualized male counterpart, and Bad Rudy, a crass, crime-positive red panda.
By releasing provocative NSFW chatbots, Musk is likely attempting to shock consumers into adopting an emerging technology that he has sunk billions of dollars into developing, especially
with regard to data-center construction.
While revenue increases for xAI -- driven by the release of the latest Grok model -- Musk is
betting on the long-term adoption of companion AIs, which are expected to scale fivefold by 2030, hitting $150 billion in annual global revenue, according to ARK Invest.
Unfortunately, experts are concerned that AI companionship is not being regulated for younger users and could have unprecedented consequences on the personal growth and well being of children and teens, the loneliest consumers and human relationships
overall.
Notably, xAI was recently dropped from several government contracts with the White House because of Grok naming itself “MechaHitler,” along
with other antisemitic responses.
It is still unknown whether xAI will release any of these prototypes to the public.
