Copilot Mode's AI features in Microsoft Edge can now reason
and see across open tabs to start a chat, search, summarize information, fill out forms, and book hotels.
The announcement came just days after OpenAI released its competing Atlas AI
browser.
A feature called "Actions" allows Copilot to complete tasks such as hotel bookings, and "Journeys" will connect and trace connections between browsing sessions across multiple tabs.
It is permission-based, with a toggle switch that allows users to turn the feature on and off.
Rather than scrolling through a set of blue links on a search page, the upgrade allows users to
complete tasks such as comparing recipes across multiple tabs, summarizing instructions and creating a cooking schedule for occasions such as a dinner party for friends and relatives.
Memory
— the capacity to remember browsing history and incorporate it into AI browsers — has emerged as a new technology taking the place of cookies for ad targeting. However, few advertising
executives are discussing this transition.

Recently, both OpenAI and Yelp announced they are integrating memory features into their search or browser platforms.
The AI mode in
Copilot will anticipate and assist users in completing tasks online as a permission-based tool. It will return users back to the session they left if there is a short time period and the user cannot
finish the task using the browser history to remember important information.
Users can control the AI browsing experience, turning the feature on and off when needed. The technology will even
unsubscribe users to prevent them from paying for services they no longer use.
Christopher Carter, founder of Approyo, an IT consulting company specializing in SAP AI and cloud services, in an
email to MediaPost acknowledged the shift and the speed at which “AI applications are pushing the boundaries for user experience and business strategy.”
When Copilot is active,
users see clear visual cues, so they know when it is taking an action, listening or viewing. The data remains on the machine.
Microsoft will only collect data when it is needed to improve the
experience, or what the user chooses to provide to personalize settings.
Sean Lyndersay, vice president of Microsoft Edge, wrote in a blog post that Copilot follows Microsoft’s trusted
privacy standards, meaning the user's information is never shared without permission. Browser data is protected under the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
The browser uses Scareware blocker to help protect from full-screen scam takeovers and is enabled by default for Edge users
on qualifying devices. Edge also offers password management features for password security. The
password management features help create stronger passwords, store them safely and monitor them for breaches 24/7.
Edge Copilot Mode was introduced in July, when it rolled out with basic features
including a Search bar on new tabs and natural voice navigation.
