Tirico Is Man Of The Moment For NBC's 'Legendary February'

NBC Sports king Mike Tirico is the man of the month on NBC as he switches gears practically overnight this coming weekend from the Super Bowl to the Winter Olympics.

Tirico, 59, will handle the play-by-play at Super Bowl LX (60) on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, located 45 miles from San Francisco and home to the 49ers. As always, his commentator cohort will be Cris Collinsworth.

This year’s Super Bowl on NBC pits the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks vs. the AFC’s New England Patriots.

As usual, kickoff is at approximately 6:30 p.m. Eastern. The game will likely end between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

When this Sunday’s Super Bowl concludes, Tirico will host “Primetime In Milan” on NBC “beginning minutes after he calls Super Bowl LX,” NBC says.

Then on Monday, he takes a travel day to fly to Milan to take up his starring role on Tuesday, February 10, as live and prime-time host for the duration of the Games, which end on Sunday, February 22.

NBC notes that the Milan Games will be Tirico’s fifth as host -- third-most in TV history after Bob Costas (11) and the late Jim McKay (8).

Tirico will miss the official start of the Games. They begin this Saturday with the opening ceremonies on NBC hosted by Savannah Guthrie and Terry Gannon.

NBC is billing its cornucopia of sports events this month as “Legendary February.”

In addition to the Olympics and Super Bowl, NBC is including the NBA All-Star game under its “Legendary” sports umbrella, although the NBA All-Star Game is hardly on par with the Super Bowl and Olympics.

Indeed, the NBA All-Star Game was a prime-time event on TNT for years. But this year, the game is being relegated to 5 p.m. Eastern on NBC on Sunday, February 15, which happens to be smack in the middle of the Olympics.

The schedule was likely made this way so that the All-Star Game will not interfere with NBC’s continuing prime-time coverage of the Olympics.

Tirico has also been doing play-by-play on NBC’s prime-time NBA games this season, but it is doubtful he will call the All-Star Game all the way from Italy.
