X Announces Completion Of Year-Long Android App Rebuild

X has completed the rebuild of its Android app -- a year-long process that the company's head of product Nikita Bier describes as “one of the largest engineering projects” the company has undergone since Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022.

According to Bier’s X post on Monday, the rebuilt Android app -- done “from scratch” -- is designed to offer Android mobile users an improved experience. Highlighted in the post, however, was Bier’s excitement over the possibility of enabling X to develop new features at a faster rate.

“Going forward, many things will hit Android first,” Bier writes.

However, the team of engineers who worked on the rebuild is currently working on several missing features, including the ability to host Spaces and improved performance on older Android devices.

“There are still some rough edges,” Bier notes.

Rebuilding X’s Android app became a priority for the company last year when the company noticed a sharp increase in Android app downloads.

Considering Musk’s long-term goal of transforming X into an “everything app,” similar to China's WeChat platform, delivering an enhanced Android mobile app could benefit the company, as the majority of the world’s smartphone users have Androids.

The Android app rebuild comes as X looks to rebuild its reputation following a reduced content-moderation team, an influx of harmful and offensive content, a mass advertiser boycott, a loss of users, and national app bans across the globe.

Per Musk's everything app ambitions, X recently rolled out X Chat – a private messaging app -- and X Money -- a digital payments service.

As for creator and brand incentives, X has also tried to boost original content by cutting aggregator payouts while labeling paid partnership posts, decluttering the main feed, and introducing a million dollar fund intended to incentivize creators to livestream on the platform via a new video editor.

The new Android app is currently available for download on the Google Play Store.
