YouTube Alters 'Shorts' Algorithm For Originality

In line with recent changes made by Meta and X, YouTube has decided to update its Shorts recommendation algorithm in order to prioritize “originality.”

We're updating our recommendation systems to further prioritize original content and reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own,” the company’s announcement reads.

Shorts is currently YouTube's most popular content format, generating over 200 billion daily views.

The update of its recommendation algorithm is an effort to deliver a better viewing experience for YouTube's user base, while also giving creator content a better chance of gaining traction.

YouTube defines unoriginal content as “channels identified as primarily aggregating or re-uploading other creators’ videos without significant changes.” Soon, these accounts will see less distribution within the Shorts feed.

“If you use clips from another creator, make sure you’re adding real value through your own original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling,” the company’s updated policy explains.

Considering the updated algorithm, YouTube suggests that creators “focus on bringing your own voice, storytelling, or distinct point of view” to their content, rather than “making minor technical edits or template-based changes simply to alter a video.”

However, re-sharing Shorts and quoting posts will remain a relevant way to add originality to an ongoing conversation.

YouTube’s announcement comes as other leading social-media platforms are making similar algorithmic changes.

In May, Instagram also changed its core recommendations algorithm, extending its originality guidelines to discourage aggregators from reposting others’ content across a wider variety of display formats.

“We know how frustrating it can be to see aggregators benefit from your work,” the company’s announcement stated, addressing creators directly.

In September, X replaced its Revenue Sharing program with the “Original Content Rewards Program,” designed to incentivize creators to post original content on the platform.
