Adam, movies lost "mass appeal"---in terms of theatrical attendence---many decades ago. They get mass coverage via TV/SVOD exposure, mainly, not the 1930s way---in theatres. I think that the lower ratiings for the Oscars special on TV reflects first, the quality of the show---not so hot; second, the availablilty of many other viewing alternatives; and third, the possibility that many people are disinchanted with Hollywood in general---but not necessarily a good movie when one finally turns up.
