    Coca-Cola is the latest brand to prove that the mobile check-in fad may not be over yet, with a new campaign that drives awareness and funds for ten nonprofits in New York. The soda giant has teamed up with Global Poverty Project on the "Movement for a Movement" campaign that involves a scavenger hunt throughout New York leveraging mobile check-ins to educate consumers about social issues and trigger donations. The campaign runs through Sept. 15.

  • Apple Acquisition Hints at Fingerprint Scanning for Commerce
    Last year, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) made a massive investment in fingerprint scanning technology. Instead of spending a small sum of money to acquire a startup (which is very common for the company), Apple paid $365 million to acquire AuthenTec. Before the acquisition, AuthenTec worked with companies like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) to deliver a full fingerprint scanning solution.   • Location-Based Shopping App Company Acquired
    The founders of Snapette, the location-based fashion shopping app founded in 2011, announced it has been acquired by PriceGrabber, the price comparison site based in Los Angeles. Sarah Paiji, the app's co-founder, says the nine-person company will continue to operate out of its New York office. Though the terms of the acquisition were not revealed, the deal likely represents a decent payday for the company's founders and investors, which include Accel Partners, 500 Startups, Forerunner Ventures, and Brian Lee of Shoedazzle. The company had been largely bootstrapped, aside from a $1.5 million in a seed round in October 2011.

    Macy's is extending its annual Shop for a Cause event into mobile by letting customers text to donate and simultaneously receive a coupon that is good for 25 percent off purchases. This is eighth annual Shop for a Cause event, during which Macy's offers customers a one-day 25 percent discount with a $5 donation to March of Dimes or other participating local charities.
