• Google Posts Privacy Fine On Its French Site
    Google has been forced to post a privacy fine notice on the homepage of its French website. CNIL - the French regulatory body for data privacy laws - fined the search engine EUR150,000 last month for failing to warn users how their data is used. Google refused to meet the demand and launched an emergency appeal to France's highest appeals court, the Conseil d'Etat, which it quickly rejected.
  • Glee Comedy Club Victorious Over U.S. TV Studio
    The owner of a British comedy business called The Glee Club claimed a "David and Goliath" victory on Friday after a high court judge ruled that its trademark had been infringed by 20th Century Fox TV show Glee. The future of the TV series on UK TV screens appeared to be thrown into doubt by the ruling, which said 20th Century Fox had "infringed" a trademark and had potentially "put off" comedy club customers.

    The Times and Sunday Times annual digital subscribers will benefit from free Spotify Premium after a deal between the digital music service and News UK. According to Spotify, the deal is the first of its kind between the service and a media owner, and subscribers will have access to over 20 million songs across their devices.

  • Brooks Sought Meeting With Ex 'About Phone-hacking'
    Rebekah Brooks emailed ex-husband Ross Kemp and said "need to talk to you about phone-hacking", the Old Bailey heard yesterday. Police retrieved emails from the BlackBerry of the former News International chief executive after her arrest in July 2011, the hacking trial was told. Prosecutor Andrew Edis QC read out emails between Brooks and the TV hard man as they arranged to meet.
  • BuzzFeed UK Adds Yet Another Editor
    BuzzFeed UK is to add a news editor to its growing team of editorial staff, as deputy online editor for Metro.co.uk Richard James is due to join, according to the social news outlet. The appointment of James will bring BuzzFeed UK's editorial team up to 16, more than a five-fold increase on the starting line-up of three at launch last year.

    Its "Attention Minutes" tracks on both a site-wide basis and on a per-article basis. In order to arrive at this metric, the site says it looks at a wide range of signals about user behavior - including mouse movement, open browser tabs, whether a video player is activated, etc. - to see whether someone is still paying attention.

    Based in Karl-Liebknecht-Strae, Berlin, the new office will be concentrating on research and development along with the global version of mapping service, Yandex Maps. Germany's capital was selected because of the many universities that could supply capable talent, a lively startup scene and what Yandex says is an 'optimal' cost of living.
  • Building Design Sheds Print, Focuses On Digital
    United Business Media, publisher of trade magazine Building Design has announced its decision to cease publication of its print edition in order to focus solely on online output. Launched in 1970 by Morgan-Grampian the tabloid-style weekly presented itself as an informal alternative to titles such as the Architects Journal and Urban Realm.
