The EU's highest court this week ruled that one website can link to another without fearing a copyright lawsuit. The ruling, which came in response to a complaint from Swedish journalists, reflects a growing sophistication in Europe about how the internet works, and was hailed with a sigh of relief by legal scholars.

Google has taken the unusual step of publishing the full text of its EU antitrust settlement proposal, which has received approval from Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia. The proposal would see Google reconfigure its results page in Europe to give rivals to its own services equal prominence. It would also require Google to stop scraping content from search rivals, and stop locking ad clients into its platform with anticompetitive terms and conditions.

Nearly half of UK social media users believe that brands and individuals can use social media for political good - influencing opinions on racism and gay rights as a result. Created by Branded3, the campaign sought to understand how important social media users from sites such as Twitter and Facebook felt their influence could be on the world. 49% argued social media could change politics, with 46% saying it could help influence gay rights and 45% saying the same for racism.

Having launched successfully in 2012 in its home market of Sweden and in the US last year, Readly will roll out to UK consumers in March and globally through the rest of the year.

Guardian Media Group (GMG) has taken a 15 per cent stake in code and data education company Decoded. Decoded, which runs courses such as Code in a Day and Data in a Day, will now see Andrew Miller, chief executive officer of GMG, join the board as a non-executive director.
