Cannes: WPP Wins Holding Company Lion, O&M Nabs Agency Honors

For the second year in a row, WPP won the Cannes Lion for Holding Company of the Year, while subsidiary Ogilvy & Mather won Agency Network of the Year honors.

The holding company award is based on the total number of Cannes Lions won by the firm’s agencies. Each win accounts for a number of points under the Cannes scoring system. WPP racked up 1,554.5 points in the competition, followed by Omnicom with 1375.5 and Publicis with 1032. 

WPP agencies from 50 countries received awards. Wins included a PR Grand Prix for JWT Puerto Rico, an Outdoor Grand Prix for Ogilvy Shanghai and a Mobile Grand Prix for Johannes Leonardo (with Grow). 

The Agency Network of the Year Award is based the highest score for entries in the Film, Press, Outdoor, Radio, Media, Cyber, Direct, Promo, Titanium and Integrated categories.

The Agency of the Year Award went to Portland, Ore.-based Wieden + Kennedy, which also won for Independent Agency of the Year. Those awards are given to the agencies that obtain the highest score for entries in the Press, Outdoor, Film, Film Craft and Radio Lions, as well as the Cyber and Titanium and Integrated sections.

The Media Agency of the Year award went to Antwerp-based Duval Guillaume Modem. The award is given to the shop that obtains the highest score for all of its entries in the Media Lions section. 

The Cannes Lion Advertiser Of The Year Award went to candy and snack food marketer Mars. The award is presented to the advertiser that has demonstrated “inspiring innovative marketing of their products and who embraces and encourages the creative work produced by its agencies,” per the festival.

Before the festival began, organizers said that Wieden + Kennedy co-founder Dan Wieden would receive the Lion of St. Mark at this year’s gathering, a sort of lifetime achievement Lion. Also earlier, the festival named Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey Media Person of the Year for his influence on today’s media landscape.
