iOS Holiday Shoppers Spend $112, Android $87

The flow of research studies around holiday shopping behaviors and patterns is nearing a fever pitch, with new tracking results coming out on a daily basis.

As we near two of the most-watched shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, various projections are coming from countless entities.

From a mobile commerce perspective, most of the studies we see include at least some mobile components, so I thought it might be worthwhile to highlight just a few of the tidbits from various studies to see where this shopping season may be heading.

As overall perspective, most (70%) of consumers will have started their holiday shopping before Black Friday, according to a survey conducted by RSR Research for Local Corporation. That report comprised a survey of 5,000 smartphone owners.

Cyber Monday may be a dud, with only 5% of consumers planning to shop then, according to RSR Research.

But then again, maybe not. Almost half (47%) of consumers plan to get some of their shopping done on Cyber Monday, according to a survey by Ipsos Public Affairs for That report comprised a demographically weighted survey of 1,000 adults from the Ipsos online panel.

It found Black Friday to be a more popular shopping day than Cyber Monday, with more than half (53%) planning to shop the day after Thanksgiving.

Consistent with other studies, Ipsos found that fewer than half (44%) plan to use their mobile device when shopping this holiday season with the top activities being looking for coupons and deals, comparing products at different stores and checking product reviews.

In yet another large-scale tracking report, mobile already has accounted for almost half (49%) of all online traffic and more than a quarter (27%) of all online sales, according to IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark. That data is based on the tracking of billions of online transactions, which is done in real time.

Consumers are spending an average of $105 via mobile and $123 from their desktops, according to IBM. The average order value from iOS devices is $112 and $87 from Android devices.

Most interesting will be to save all these holiday shopping projections for after the holidays to see which ended up being the most accurate. No matter the overall results, it is likely mobile will be more involved this year than last.
