Things are becoming really interesting at the Internet of Things. IBM announced today that it has acquired the Weather Co., the digital platform that operates the Weather Channel and Weather Underground -- and will use its amazing Watson tool to help a wide array of businesses and others to determine shipping, production and other business-related concerns.
Bloomberg reports: "While IBM already had access to the Weather Channel’s data, the acquisition will allow IBM to use the underlying platform." It "can ingest data at a very high volume in fractions of a second that will be an engine that feeds Watson,' John Kelly, a senior vice president at IBM, told the business journalism site.
The applications and Web sites handle 65 billion unique accesses on weather data a day, Kelly said. No purchase price was announced.
